Call for stories from RNIG members

Posted on Feb. 12, 2024, 2:29 p.m.

Dear RNIG member:

The mission of the Rainbow Nursing Interest Group (RNIG) is to foster and advocate for nursing practice environments that support people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. RNIG has more than 800 members – RNs, NPs and nursing students.

There are many reasons why the 2SLGBTQI+ community is special to us on the RNIG executive. The RNIG executive recently got together to share what that reason was for each one of us. Some shared the positive impact they can have when being openly gay in their clinical environment. Another shared how having a transgender child reframed their perspective on love and acceptance. Another shared how the intersection – and sometimes conflict – between culture and sexuality can help forge a legacy to raise up others. This executive has a lot of inspiring, empowering stories that give us the passion and drive to do what we do for the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

Storytelling is an accessible way to share ideas that move and inspire us. We would like to hear from you! Tell us your stories about experiences you’ve had with members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community within the health-care system.  Stories of how different parts of you influence the different communities that you’re a part of. Tell us what makes you passionate about working with and for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Tell us about initiatives you’re working on, or positive changes you want to see for our community.

Submissions can be written, or you can let us know if you are interested in connecting with RNAO to be part of a video. Consent is critical. Please ensure before beginning your story, that anyone about whom you are writing has provided their written consent for their story to be shared. Keep privacy in mind when you share your story, and avoid anything that would identify, or out anyone in the community who has not given consent.

The attached consent form will allow us to share your submission with RNAO. Consent can be rescinded at any time. Both members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and allies who serve the community are welcome to submit. Selected stories will be shared in an upcoming Spring 2024 RNAO event – more information to be released soon.

Submission Deadline: April 15, 2024

Submission Guidelines: A first-person narrative about your experiences working in health care as a 2SLGBTQI+ individual. Submissions must be typed in a Word document and must be at maximum 500 words. If you are interested in being in a video to tell your story, then please email us.
